Me on Paper

Artist Statement

A combination of ornate ceramic objects, costume and participatory gestures are the mediums I use to create an imagined, daydreamed context. My objects are a production of the romantic world in which they have been invented in. As the maker of those objects I too then, have stepped between worlds. These objects act as tangible proof of another world existing. They are evidence of the imagined.

As maker, I also assume the role of heroine – whether enchantress, priestess, queen, or simply hostess I, as heroine, mimic this history of powerful, independent, and idolized archetypes. In embodying these personas I enable myself and my work to act as a portal. A portal of storytelling, a portal between the imagined and the real, and a portal between the idealized and genuine self.

The ceramic objects are transportive, the costume validates persona and the participatory gesture is important to seduce the audience within the context. Engaging in my work becomes an act of play, an invitation to handle the sentimental, ceramic objects, and to recognize the daydream. In escaping into my moment of magic and daydream, participants may recollect their own world of escape. I am encouraging my audience to return to that world that some have left behind in childhood.
